Replica “Man of the Douro” – Ribatua

Replica of the Monument located in ALIJÓ, at the main traffic circle in the center of the village, next to the Town Hall and the Pousada Barão de Forrester and that constitutes a “HOMENAGE to the MAN of the DOURO”, in this case, symbolizing the grape harvests, but more generally, the hard work of various natures that lie ahead. The sculpture highlights one of the noblest figures in the region.

Here we pay tribute to the hard work and courageous effort of man in the vineyard with his harvesting basket. It is one of the most laborious and thankless crops for the farmer, the production of this ancient and precious “nectar”.

The Douro lives in a very special way from this activity, given the difficulties imposed by the natural relief of the region, which implies the use of soil almost exclusively in terraces, which greatly hinders all work related to wine.

Nature, in the first place, will have to make an important contribution. The “man” is required, throughout the year and not only in this season, to give constant attention to the vineyards, which is not always taken into account by those who are not related to this activity. The climatic conditions of the year will result in a wine of better or worse quality, which, on equal terms, will owe its excellence to the terroir.

From the composition, slope, and sun exposure of the soils, to grafting, pruning, tilling, and treatments, there is a whole process designed to ensure that the vineyard is productive and has quality.
